How to choose a dog walking bag

Compiled by Tern & Hound · Published 30 September 2026

Start with what you carry. Not how many pockets you can fill.

The most useful dog walking bag is one that holds your usual essentials and lets you reach them comfortably while managing the lead. Compare its dimensions, opening, strap range and cleaning requirements before choosing the style.

Make a real-world packing list

Put your regular walking items on a table: phone with its case, keys, waste bags and anything else you reliably bring. Decide whether treats or a water bottle need space inside the bag or will travel separately.

Now measure the bulky items. A bag's external width does not necessarily describe the width of its zipped opening or internal pocket. Where a product says it fits a phone, compare the actual measurements rather than assuming it fits every model and case.

Compare the main styles

Style Why consider it? What to check
Crossbody Easy to wear with everyday clothes and position across the body. Strap adjustment, where it rests, access to the main opening and movement when bending.
Compact walking bag A smaller option when you only carry a few essentials. Internal capacity, opening width and whether your phone leaves room for keys.
Bum bag or waist-worn style Can keep essentials close to the body. Usable belt range, fastening, comfort over layers and whether the product is designed for alternative wear.

Think about access, not just capacity

Consider which items you need during a walk and which can stay zipped away. Separating keys from treats may matter more than having a large number of compartments. Check how waste-bag dispensing works, whether rolls are included and whether refills need a particular size.

A bulky bottle inside a small bag can change the way it sits. Do not assume an external loop or decorative ring is rated to carry a full bottle unless the manufacturer describes that use.

Materials and weather

Read the material and care details for the exact product. Vegan leather describes a non-animal alternative; it does not identify one universal material or guarantee waterproofing. Likewise, a water-resistant fabric does not necessarily protect a phone through every seam or zip.

Keep items that cannot get wet protected appropriately, and follow the bag's cleaning instructions rather than applying a treatment intended for a different material.

Choose a colour you will use often

A neutral walking bag can work with several harness colours. Matching everything is optional: using one repeated colour can create a coordinated look without replacing useful equipment you already own.

Compare a crossbody, compact or waist-worn bag with your existing routine before adding more accessories.

Five checks before checkout

  1. Does the opening fit your largest regular item?
  2. Is the strap or belt range suitable for how you will wear it?
  3. Are pockets, dispensers and accessories clearly described?
  4. Are the care instructions manageable for your routine?
  5. Have you checked delivery charges for the whole basket?
