How to care for dog beds and blankets

Check what is washable, not just whether the listing says washable.

Read the care label for the exact bed or blanket before cleaning it. A removable, machine-washable cover does not mean that the filling, foam insert or complete bed can go in the machine. Different components can have different instructions.

Separate the components before choosing a method

Identify the outer cover, cushion cover, side inserts and filling where applicable. Check which parts can be removed and photograph the original arrangement if that will make reassembly easier. Do not force a zip or assume an insert is designed to be taken apart.

Look for the wash temperature, permitted cycle, detergent guidance and drying method. If those details are missing, ask the brand before starting.

What Ralph & Co's guidance illustrates

Ralph & Co distinguishes between its different bed constructions. Its current care page describes 30°C washing for removable covers on several bed types and advises against tumble drying those covers. Its waterproof-bed instructions are different: a low-temperature or hand-wash setting without detergent, followed by natural drying. Its blanket guidance specifies 30°C washing and natural drying.

These are examples of why the product category alone is not enough. Follow the current instructions supplied with your own model and generation of product; do not apply one brand's directions to another.

Questions to ask before buying

Question Why it helps
Which covers unzip? Clarifies whether all fabric areas can be removed.
Can the insert be washed? Separates cover care from filling care.
What drying method is allowed? Helps you plan space and time without assuming tumble drying is permitted.
Are replacement covers available? May offer a practical option while one cover is being cleaned, if the exact replacement is supplied.
Does the care method fit the size? A large removable cover still needs adequate room in the appropriate machine.

Between washes

Use only the surface-cleaning methods appropriate to the fabric and construction. Check the manufacturer's instructions before using an upholstery cleaner, fragrance spray, disinfectant or waterproofing treatment.

Inspect the bed when changing covers. Damaged zips, loose material or exposed filling need attention before further use. Follow the manufacturer's advice about repair or replacement rather than hiding damage beneath a blanket.

Drying and reassembly

Let the permitted components dry thoroughly before reassembling the bed, using the method given on the label. Check that inserts sit correctly and that zips close without stretching the fabric. Do not use direct heat or a dryer simply to speed things up when the instructions do not permit it.

Coordinated does not mean identical care

A bed and matching blanket can use different fabrics and need different washing routines. Keep both care labels accessible. Choose the easier routine for your household rather than assuming the most decorative option will also be the simplest to maintain.

Browse dog beds and blankets, or use the bed size guide to compare the practical details together.
