What size dog bed does your dog need?

Compiled by Tern & Hound · Published 30 September 2026

Outside dimensions fit the room. Inside dimensions fit the dog.

Choose a dog bed by comparing your dog's usual resting space with the bed's usable sleeping area. Check the outside footprint separately to make sure the bed fits your home. Size names and breed suggestions are only a starting point.

Start with the way your dog rests

Watch where and how your dog settles. Do they usually curl up, stretch out, lean against an edge or change between several positions? Measure the length and width of the space they comfortably occupy rather than trying to compress that position into the smallest possible rectangle.

Note those measurements and compare them with the dimensions given for each bed. Do not use one universal extra-space allowance across every shape and construction.

Three dimensions worth checking

Dimension What it tells you Common mistake
External length and width The floor space the whole bed occupies. Assuming the whole footprint is available to sleep on.
Internal sleeping area The useful space inside raised sides. Comparing a bolster bed's outside size with a flat bed's sleeping surface.
Height and entry How tall the sides and entry point are. Choosing from an overhead photograph alone.

For example, a hypothetical bed measuring 90 by 70 cm outside with 10 cm sides around the sleeping space would have roughly 70 by 50 cm inside. That is an illustration of why the distinction matters, not the specification of a product in our range.

Mark out the footprint at home

Use a tape measure to mark the proposed location and allow for doors, walkways and nearby furniture. A bed that only just fits a corner may be awkward to remove for cleaning. Check access to covers and zips as part of the placement, not as an afterthought.

When measuring a crate mattress, compare the exact usable crate floor dimensions and the mattress measurements. A general size name such as Medium does not establish compatibility with a crate carrying the same label.

Bolster or flat bed?

A raised edge reduces the open sleeping surface compared with the outside footprint. A flat pillow style has a different shape and gives a clearer open surface to compare, but still needs its actual measurements checked. Our bolster versus flat bed guide sets out the practical trade-offs.

Check the exact model and size

Specifications can differ across beds from the same brand. Open the selected size's dimensions rather than relying on a range-wide table or the first price shown on a product card. Ask for clarification if only an external size is listed.

Ralph & Co's individual product listings provide model-specific details; use those for the bed in question. A bed described as orthopaedic or calming is not a treatment recommendation, and the wording alone does not establish suitability for a particular health condition.

Before you buy

Confirm the size, internal area where applicable, cover-care requirements and delivery terms. Consider a washable blanket only when it adds something useful to the resting space, not to compensate for a bed that is too small.
